Stimulus Payment 2020 Filing Extension – Update

Due to the economic impact of COVID-19 on individuals and families, the federal government has been sending payments of $1,200 and an additional $500 per dependent child over the past several months.  They are commonly referred to as “stimulus” payments, but the IRS – which issues them — calls them “Economic Impact Payments” (EIPs).  Most EIPs were sent out automatically, based on 2018 or 2019 federal income tax returns, or enrollment in Social Security, Social Security Disability (SSDI), Railroad Retirement (RR), Supplemental Security Income (SSI), or Veteran’s (VA) benefits.

To receive an EIP for yourself or dependent children, you must act by 1:00 pm MST on November 21, 2020 to receive it in 2020.

Who may file for an EIP?  U.S. Citizens and Lawful Permanent Residents who have a Social Security Number (SSN) who did not file federal income tax returns for 2018 or 2019, and either:

(a) began receiving Social Security or SSI benefits in or after January 2020; or

(b) have incomes below the amount at which federal income tax returns are required ($12,200 for individuals; $24,400 for married couples), and do not receive Social Security, RR, SSDI, or VA benefits.

How Do I File for an EIP?  You must apply for an EIP online, using the IRS “Non-filers” tool at  You will be asked to provide an email address and to create a special account.

 EIPs for Dependent Children:

Individuals who have not yet received an EIP for dependent children must provide information to the IRS by 1:00 pm MST on November 21, 2020  to receive $500 per dependent child in 2020. (The term “child” is broadly defined, and includes for example dependent grandchildren, siblings, and nieces/nephews.)

How Do I File for a Dependent Child EIP?  You must apply for the payment online using the IRS “Non-filers” tool at

If you live in Bernalillo, Sandoval, Torrance or Valencia counties and are aged 60 or older and need help applying for EIPs online, contact the Senior Citizens’ Law Office at 505.265.2300.
